DHL Lifesaving South African Championships returns to Gqeberha

The 2023 DHL Lifesaving South African Championships has kicked off and runs through to 5 April in Gqeberha, home of action and adventure sports.

It’s been a busy month for the Treble team, who have been working behind the scenes to deliver the DHL Lifesaving SA Champs, while also prepping for matchday duties for the Heineken European Cup knockout clash at DHL Stadium in the ‘DHL Derby’ between the DHL Stormers and Harlequins.

As the exclusive commercial and marketing agency to DHL Lifesaving South Africa, while also being the brand activation agency for DHL Express in Sub-Saharan Africa, Treble has worked tirelessly to deliver this world-class lifesaving event.

It’s been richly rewarding to see months of planning coming to fruition and a rare privilege to witness over 1500 of the country’s lifesaving specialists competing in the surf and sand at Kings Beach, and at the pool events at Newton Park Swimming Pool.  The Championships brings families from across the country in a celebration and culmination of the Lifesaving season.

The LSA Federation’s executives Craig van Rooyen (LSA Director of Sport)and Helen Herbert (LSA General Manager) together with the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality; and Lifesaving SA’s sponsors and partners, DHL, Treble Group, National Lotteries Commission, Department of Sport and Recreationand the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation SA, collectively have worked to ensure that all championship events – both surf and pool – go ahead safely.

NMBM Mayoral Committee Member for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Cllr Bassie Kamana said the Metro had the most beautiful beaches in the country, so it is only fitting for an event such as the DHL Lifesaving South African Championships to be held in NMB.

“We have hosted the event many times and are excited to see lifesavers return to NMB. We welcome supporters and families to NMB and trust that you’ll enjoy your stay. We continue to establish NMB as a preferred sporting destination and welcome the economic injection into the City,” MMC Kamana said.

The seven-day championship event takes place during the school holidays to accommodate the Junior and Nipper divisions. Last year saw a limited number of spectators permitted due to COVID-19 restrictions but for the first time since 2019, the event is open to the public, who are welcome to cheer on their lifesaving heroes.

“I am proud to be part of such a prestigious event and look forward to action packed events, top performances, and great competition in both pool and surf over the seven days in Gqeberha. On behalf of LSA, we wish all the members the best of luck, safe travels, and an enjoyable week at the event,” said Craig van Rooyen, LSA Director of Sport.

Exciting Times for DHL Lifesaving SA Sport

A youthful Lifesaving South Africa national squad with little international experience showed their class in the water to claim first place overall and pip their Egyptian hosts at the 2022 Lifesaving Africa Championships held in February in Alexandra, Egypt.

The championship event was preceded by the second African Drowning Prevention Conference, as the Egyptian Diving and Lifesaving Federation (EDLF) welcomed its African counterparts under the slogan: ‘Africa United to Stop Drowning’.

With a relatively inexperienced squad the South Africa team dominated the water events, which played a major role in the Proteas finishing the championships with a combined total of 500 points. Hosts Egypt finished second on 468 points and Morocco claimed the bronze spot with 410 points.

The valuable international experience gained from their successful exploits in Egypt will serve this young South African squad well as they look to compete in future events. On a national scale, though, this will add an extra layer of competitiveness when the DHL Lifesaving SA National Champs takes place next month at King’s Beach in Gqberha.

Although a short turnaround since last year’s championships, which happened a few months ago in October, the standard of competition among the competing clubs will be one of the highlights of the annual event as the members of the youthful South Africa squad will be up against several of the streetwise seniors who did not compete in Egypt.

The Treble team look forward to being part of the action on the beach next month, where we will be leveraging DHL’s sponsorship of Lifesaving South Africa by managing a full branding strategy and event production solution for the entire event.

This also includes producing an exclusive print, digital and broadcast media package that will cover all the action, results, and drama of the DHL Lifesaving SA National Champs.

Countdown to SA Champs begins

South Africa’s Lifesaving clubs are busy preparing for the coming warmer months with nipper training kicking off next weekend, while new lifeguards are qualifying, and retests are underway so that lifeguards are adequately prepared to fulfil their duties.

Lifesaving athletes have also been preparing hard during the cold winter for the DHL Lifesaving SA National Championships, which will be held for the first time since 2019 due to the Covid pandemic cancelling the various 2020 events.

As we begin the one-month countdown to one of our favourite sporting events, the Treble Team is looking forward to the highly anticipated DHL Lifesaving SA National Championships at the beginning of October (2-9th) in Gqberha – the home of action and adventure sports that showcases the very best of South Africa’s lifesaving talent.

As the exclusive commercial and marketing agency to Lifesaving South Africa, the Treble Group has worked tirelessly with the relevant authorities in the build-up to ensure the ‘Olympics’ of the lifesaving community goes ahead with strict Covid protocols and regulations due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It’s an event that is close to our hearts and we look forward to delivering a world-class event where lifesaving’s finest talent will be able to compete nationally against their rival clubs.

DHL Partners with Lifesaving South Africa

DHL Express, the world’s leading international express services provider, announced their exciting new title partnership with Lifesaving South Africa (LSA) earlier on Thursday.

Treble is thrilled to have facilitated this new partnership between LSA and DHL, which will see an elevated commitment to keeping South Africa’s beaches, swimming pools and inland waterways safe.

The partnership will cover three key areas, including Primary Partner to LSA’s voluntary duty lifeguards, Naming Rights to the National Championships and Presenting Partner rights for the national Watersmart water safety programme.

Treble’s valued relationship with LSA, as their exclusive commercial and marketing agency for several years, has seen immense growth within LSA’s voluntary community, while also taking LSA’s annual sporting event, the Lifesaving South Africa National Championships to greater heights.

DHL is no stranger to the greater lifesaving community, having sponsored Surf Lifesaving Australia and Surf Lifesaving New Zealand since 2003, where they feature prominently on the beaches, while working closely with them to deliver on their water safety objectives.

DHL Express’ VP Marketing for Sub Saharan Africa, Megan Collinicos, is excited by the prospect of this new partnership. “We are particularly delighted to be partnering with LSA, as this is a unique opportunity to demonstrate our organisational purpose of Connecting People & Improving Lives. DHL recognises the importance of LSA’s mission to save lives and build better communities, and we look forward to playing our part in delivering water safety for all,” Collinicos said.

LSA as a service and sporting organisation is committed to providing lifeguarding services and to promote and educate the development of water safety across all communities in South Africa. Every year, LSA equips thousands of lifeguards with the necessary skills to protect South African beaches and inland swimming areas, contributing to public and community safety.

DHL’s investment into LSA’s Watersmart Programme will ensure the drowning prevention programme reaches over 400 schools per annum while creating employment for 50 facilitator lifeguards. DHL will also be delivering an innovative Watersmart digital hub that will increase the reach dramatically, to ensure that the messaging of water safety is delivered to all.

The partnership will see DHL featured prominently on beaches, at swimming pools and inland waterways across South Africa, and over 4000 lifeguards across 86 clubs will receive new DHL LSA duty kit. All Lifesaving clubs will also receive duty area equipment including “Lifeguards on Duty” banners and for the beach clubs, new “Swim between the flags” patrol equipment to demarcate the safe swim zones on the beach.

Our Next Challenge Awaits

As the green and gold glitter settles after the Springboks’ RWC triumph in Japan, the Treble team are busy underway ensuring that the Cape Town leg of the 2019-20 HSBC World Sevens Series will be the best one ever.

It’s exactly one month till we deliver another world-class food & beverage solution, and it’s the final stretch of 2019 for our talented and dedicated team. It’s been an event-filled year, but this one is always close to Treble’s hearts.

The beautiful Mother City will once again welcome the finest Sevens players in the world. But what makes this edition so special is that it’ll be the first time that the world’s top Women in the Sevens arena compete in their own competition.

The ladies’ competition will run alongside selected legs of the 2019-20 HSBC World Sevens Series, with the jewel in the crown coming in the form of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Supporters from across the globe will be in their element in the glorious December sun at the majestic Cape Town Stadium, which is one of the Mother City’s iconic treasures and was shortlisted for the Event of the Year Award during the Stadium Business Summit, which took place in the United Kingdom earlier this year.

The award nomination recognised the host venue and the venue’s management/operational team for delivering an excellent event. The Cape Town Sevens was also been named Best Live Sports Experience in South Africa at the Discovery Sport Industry Awards for the past two years.

Treble Group is honoured to be part of this world-class event. Our operations team successfully delivered an unmatched food and beverage solution for the fourth year in a row in 2018, catering for over 100 000 rugby supporters and 2019 promises to be the best one yet.

Another Treble Masterclass

Treble Group’s Senior Account Manager, Louise Otter, provided yet another masterclass in managing the DHL account for Treble by producing a world-class three-day event fit for royalty. Well done to Louise, whose meticulous planning and strategy ensured a brilliant end result for both Treble and DHL.

The DHL Express Employee of the Year 2018 took place in Cape Town from the 19-21 February, culminating in a glittering, red-carpet Awards Event, which DHL goes to great lengths to show how much they value their top employees in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The valued employees enjoy a variety of activities during their visit, which includes a three-night stay at the Luxurious Westin in Cape Town’s CBD area, and they get to savour some of the most sought-after venues in Cape Town. While the powerboating activity was a huge hit, one of the more poignant outings was a visit to Robben Island to honour Nelson Mandela’s memory.

The Treble team are proud to be a part of this event. Here is a sneak peak at what the DHL Express employees from 42 Sub-Saharan African countries did to celebrate their 2018 achievements. We are really honoured to be associated with DHL, and to deliver world-class activations together.

Treble shines at the Cape Town Sevens

Treble Group delivered another world-class food & beverage solution at the Cape Town leg of the 2018-19 HSBC World Sevens Series.

The Mother City welcomed the finest sevens players in the world as supporters from across the globe basked in the December sun at the majestic Cape Town Stadium.

The Blitzboks were silenced by a rampant Fiji outfit who were a man down with the scores deadlocked at 12-12 and even the colourful jerseys, which marked the 100th anniversary of the birth of former President Nelson Mandela, could not stop the Islanders’ juggernaut.

South Africa went on to clinch third place, though, with a hard-fought 10-5 win over the old enemy, New Zealand, to give the colourful stream of Blitzboks fans some consolation.

Treble Group is extremely honoured to have been part of this world-class event. Our operations team once again successfully delivered an unmatched food and beverage solution for the fourth year in a row, catering for over 100 000 rugby supporters.

Fifteen bars, 19 food stalls and food trucks manned by our energetic ground staff made sure that everyone at the Cape Town Stadium remained satisfied and hydrated with a wide range of local food and drink options.

We continue our valued partnership with South Africa’s top brewmasters, SAB, to deliver rugby’s staple refreshment at Cape Town 7s. As always, SAB dominated with multiple watering holes, keeping fans topped up with their favourite brew. Our operations team mapped out the logistics with precision, ensuring there was a welcomed lack of long queues.

Treble Group facilitate all of DHL’s various installations. With DHL being the official global logistics partner of the HSBC World Sevens Series, Treble Group provided all the solutions and activate any DHL-related services – including the interactive DHL Fan Zone, which is a highlight for fans at the Cape Town leg of the HSBC World Sevens Series.

Our communications team captured the best-dressed fans who have become the mainstay of Saturday’s festival atmosphere. Our team, the official agency for the Springbok Supporters’ Club media and communications, kept our passionate rugby fans who could not attend up-to-date with the Cape Town 7s vibe.

We are thankful for working with industry greats such as SA Breweries, Spur, Peninsula Beverages, Monster, Kauai and Vida e Caffe as well as the numerous popular food kiosk and food truck providers. We are also exceedingly grateful to SA Rugby for partnering with us at this world-class event and we look forward to counting down to December 2019.

Newlands, Cape Town – The DHL Stormers were back to winning ways in their Vodacom Super Rugby campaign at DHL Newlands against the Reds on a cool and cloudy Saturday evening, with a nail-biting 25-19 win. Treble Group was right in the middle of all the action providing hospitality and entertainment solutions to the DHL Newlands crowd.

Treble provided our outstanding and efficient food and beverage solution to the thousands of spectators who turned up to support their boys. We saw to the management of the Castle Lawns, which was buzzing with excited as fans who were eager to begin the gees with a cold Castle Lager and some rugby banter in the beer garden. The stadium bars and kiosks were lively with hungry and thirsty fans and our vendors delivered cordially.

The Treble team also activated entertainment and hospitality at the event. We were pleased to host the DHL KFM Waterwise competition winners, who scored free tickets to the match for their innovative #DayZero advice. We also hosted the DHL Superbru Couch Experience winners, where a handful of lucky fans got to witness front row action by watching the rugby right on the fields, mere meters away from the goal posts.

Half-time entertainment was also managed by the Treble team, seeing to the activation of the DHL Half-Time Cannon Ball Challenge. As usual, this was a fun crowd favourite with DHL Stormers fan Jason Pascoe winning the R 1,000 cash prize.

“It was an awesome feeling being on the middle of the field at DHL Newlands and obviously winning was even better,” said Pascoe, who was overwhelmed by the whole experience.

We wish the DHL Stormers all the best on their derby tour to Pretoria, Johannesburg and Durban to face the Vodacom Blue Bulls, Emirates Lions, and Cell C Sharks respectively.

DHL Africa Cup a resounding success for Treble

Cape Town – This past weekend, DHL Express employees from all over Sub-Saharan Africa converged in beautiful Cape Town for the inaugural DHL Africa Cup. The football tournament and cheerleading competition, an internal employee incentive programme for DHL Express employees, ended with resounding success and high spirits for everyone involved.

Treble Group is proud beyond words to have been appointed as the official event organisers of this stellar event. Our full-service and multi-disciplinary team was in its element, involving destination management, entries and registration, branding and logistics, food and beverage and digital communications. Planning and developing began in July last year and, using “It’s time for Africa!” as the theme, Treble conceptualised a uniquely African edition of the tournament that also maintained DHL’s high global standard.

Our insights and experience with travelling and eventing throughout Africa allowed us to offer DHL a tailored destination management solution, where we organised international flights, transfers between venues and accommodation for over 450 delegates from 40 different countries. This included a custom, online registration system, which we developed in-house, specific to the event’s needs.

Treble secured Ajax Football Club, in Parrow, as the tournament venue for the weekend, and branded its 12 acres of ground in DHL yellow and red. We kept supporters and resting participants entertained with mascots, inflatables, live music by Gavin Edwards and Jeremy Olivier, and the People’s Tent – 1,000 square meters of fun and relaxation, including virtual reality tours, PlayStation 4, foosball and ping pong, face-painting and lounging areas.

The football and cheerleading action was followed by an afterparty each night at Zip-Zap Circus, which our events team converted to a personalised, DHL night club, complete with trapeze artists and electric flame dancers! Treble was right at home providing the food and beverage solution for the entire weekend, from bars to food trucks and manging caterers.

Treble also provided a full-service digital communications solution, which included developing a customised website that encompassed a phone-first standard to adapt to the African scale of technology. The website was complimented with a social media campaign that kept attendees up-to-date with important event information and gave employees and families back home all the news from on the ground in Cape Town.

We have been thrilled with the feedback we received from DHL Africa Cup attendees and would like to thank DHL Express SSA for giving us the privilege to turn on an event of this calibre. We cannot wait to begin working with DHL again on Africa Cup 2019!
