Drowning is the 2nd leading accidental death in children under 15 years.
Lifesaving SA’s Watersmart School Programme is a classroom based drowning prevention strategy, designed to complement the Grade 4 national curriculum.
In 2017 the program was presented to 17,000 learners in 80 schools. In 2018 this was extended to 146 schools with over 18,000 learners. In 2019 the program reached over 250 schools, 40,000 learners, with the sponsorship from General Tire, Wimpy SA and the support of the Princess Charlene Foundation South Africa.
