Staged on Freedom Day, 27 April, the Freedom Paddle is an annual 27km surfski race from Cape Town around South Africa’s historic Robben Island and back.

Launched in 2018, the inaugural Freedom Paddle saw paddlers, including eight World Champions, complete the race around Robben Island. In 2019, a record field of 320 paddlers took to the sea with numerous World Champions competing for the winning spot.

The Freedom Paddle is an annual event on the surfski calendar and at the heart of the event is a campaign to rid the oceans of plastics, a global movement.

Celebrate the freedom of surfski paddling by racing around South Africa’s symbol of freedom – Robben Island.
